Rosslee’s Bok Squad

It’s that time of the year again when us rugby journos get to play Bok selector ahead of the three Test tour to the UK.  The Bok squad will be announced after the Currie Cup final next Saturday and - as always - there will be some surprises and players unlucky to miss out.

A rather disappointing Tri-Nations campaign has been somewhat forgotten following a pulsating and gripping Currie Cup.  Having the Springboks back in the domestic competition is worth its weight in (Green and) Gold.  The sooner the powers that be realise this, find an 10 week period where the top five teams can play each other home and away (with all their Springboks), the better.  But that’s a topic for a whole new post.

Here’s the squad that I would like to see selected:

For simplicity’s sake I’ve picked a 30-man squad with two players in each position.  The touring team will, no doubt, include a number of utility backs and loose-forwards - but this way makes it simpler to evaluate each player’s merits.

1.  Beast Mtarariwa & Gurthro Steenkamp

The Beast was one of the finds of the Tri-Nations and picks himself.  Steenkamp looked a little out of sorts for the Springboks, but looks to have found his form for the Bulls.

Unlucky:  Heinke van der Merwe

2.  John Smit & Bismarck du Plessis

These two pick themselves.  Adriaan Strauss will probably also accompany the squad as cover.

Unlucky:  Willie Wepener

3.  Jannie du Plessis & Brian Mujati

These two will battle it out to replace CJ van der Linde at tighthead.  Mujati’s scrummaging has looked a little fragile this season which possibly gives Du Plessis the inside track.

4.  Bakkies Botha (Johann Muller) and Danie Rossouw

Bakkies is expected to be fit in time to tour.  Danie Rossouw gives versatile cover with Johann Muller on standby should Botha break down.

Unlucky:  Johann Muller

5.  Andries Bekker & Victor Matfield

Matfield hasn’t been at his best this season and the time could be here for Bekker to usurp him as the number one lineout option.

6.  Schalk Burger & Heinrich Brussouw

Burger picks himself while Brussouw deserves reward for a sensational season.

Unlucky:  Cobus Grobbelaar

7.  Juan Smith & Jean Deysel

Smith’s class is bound to shine through at some stage following a rather disappointing season.  Deysel looks the business.

Unlucky:  Keegan Daniel

8.  Ryan Kankowski & Pierre Spies

Kankowski’s form should see him start ahead of Spies at number eight.  Two explosive players with different strengths and weaknesses - they are an asset to any side.

Unlucky:  Duanne Vermuelen

9.  Fourie du Preez & Ricky Januarie

Again, these are two self-explanatory picks.  Ruan Pienaar has stated his preference for playing number nine and this could see him lose out if Butch James is selected.

Unlucky:  Ruan Pienaar

10.  Peter Grant & Butch James (Ruan Pienaar)

The most eagerly awaited selection is that of flyhalf.  Butch James still stands head and shoulders above the alternatives and should be selected for this tour if he’s going to be around for the visiting Lions in ‘09.

Unlucky:  Morne Steyn

11.  Bryan Habana & Jongi Nokwe

Nokwe’s four-try heroics against Australia make him an automatic selection.

12.  Jean de Villiers & Frans Steyn

No doubt we’ll see Steyn continue to shuffle around the backline.  I’d most like to see him stick to 12 with De Villiers remaining the first choice.

Unlucky:  Wynand Olivier

13.  Adi Jacobs & Jaque Fourie

Jacobs was outstanding for the Springboks this year and will make it hard for Jaque Fourie to get back into the starting XV.  Fortunately they are very different types of players which gives PdV good options.

14.  JP Pietersen & Trompie Nontshinga

Every Springbok squad has to have a compulsory bolter.  I’m going for Trompie Nontshinga ahead of the Ndungane twins.

Unlucky:  Odwa & Akona

15.  Conrad Jantjes & Zane Kirchner

Zane Kirchner might be a little rough around the edges, but he has shown glimpses that he might be ready to make the step up.   He’d be unlikely to start - with Steyn, Pietersen & Fourie all capable at 15 - but the experience would be good for him.

So there you have it - that’s the squad I would take overseas.  No doubt you’ll want to tell me I need my head read, but make sure to include your squad if you do.

I’m not too sure what I’m going to do this weekend without any real rugby to watch - wish me luck.  Enjoy the weekend off.  See you on Monday!

Would have tried to incude Waylon Murray somewhere as he has had a good season and maybe Louis Ludik instead of Zane Kirchner?..If Juan smith is rested I would definatley take Keegan Daniel, be it just for impacts sake…and other than that you hit it on the head…

Yeah I think Waylon Murray needs another look in too.

Good Squad though, I would have Pienaar Starting at 9, and would definitely rest Juan and Take Daniels

i would have to say that the most unlcky players not to make your squad has to be Wynand olivier. That bugger had a brilliant Currie Cup. I rate Keegan daniel but i think another Super 14 will do him a world of good before he takes the step up to bok level. Trompie i dnt know but utherwise a good squad. oh and obvoiosly Ruan over Ricky…. what were you thinking bru!!!! lol

Not too bad. Personally I’d like to see Vermuelen going. Perhaps Spies should move back to wing to make space (because he isn’t a numbers eights nought).

Vermeulen deserves a chance, and can cover as a skilled blindside. Although Deysel has had many plaudits, he’s still untested. He may have won a Currie Cup player of the month, but Vermeulen was last year’s player of the Currie Cup, and selected for the Bok squad until injury hit.

What more does Heinke Van Der Merwe do - this guy really needs some higher honours recognition.

And as for a bolter, every squad needs it, Robert Ebersohn. He’s going to be a Bok great, and i think it would be good to get our most talented yougsters involved in a year end tour, get a feel for the essence and culture. Unfortunately, i don’t see where he can slot in.

It’s a step back to giving guys an acid test - Meyer Bosman playing flyhalf against Wales. I hope we can find a true successor to our number 10 jersey sooner, rather than later.

    decent squad…
i would leave trompie out and replace him with ruan pienaar (utility player)
and maybe a guy like hienke van der merwe can get a look in

Not bad, not bad. I’d let the porridge in Butch’s knees solidify for a little and let him play in the Guinness Premiership. Ruan Pienaar has been the form scrumhalf in the Currie Cup since his return. He must tour, whether as a back up 10 or in place of Januarie. Although it would be unfair to drop the Hairless One as he was great for the Boks and certainly wasn’t poor for Province.

Odwa Ndungane has had a quietly brilliant Currie Cup campaign. While he doesn’t have the low-end torque of Bryan Habana or the top-end pace of Nokwe, he has the highest work rate for a winger that I’ve seen, is rock solid on defence and very often provides an extra man on the opposite wing when the ball shifts away from his side. Trompie’s been great since he’s moved to the Lions, I’ve been a fan of his since his Free State days but Odwa’s still my pick. Another option would be to leave Kirchner out and then we can have the extra wing. Steyn, Fourie, Pietersen and Ndungane have all played at the back and provide ample cover if Jantjes hurts himself. Also think it’d do wonders for Conrad’s mental game if he knew that there was absolute faith put in him, and that it is time to have a full dip at the Bok 15 jumper. Kirchner’s diamond is so rough I’m not sure whether it’s an actual gem or one of those broken pieces of beer bottle you find at the beach. Needs to sharpen up and drop his error count in my opinion.

As for the bolter, mine comes in the form of the child prodigy, Nick Koster. He provides cover in every position in the back row. He’s big, quick and likes to have a go. While Vermuelen was great in CC ‘08 and in this year’s S14, I felt that his workrate dipped a bit in this year’s Currie Cup and he was found wanting for pace when he came up against the likes of Kankowski and Spies. Another reason to blood Koster, and this may be seen as a little controversial, is that he’ll be playing for the BaaBaas at a scout-filled Twickenham. The Poms have a habit of stealing our boy-wonders, and I for one don’t want to see this happening to the most exciting talent in Bok rugby since Bob Skinstad.

Your starting 15 picks itself, have no arguments there. This is going to be one of the most interesting overseas tours in a while, even without the Grand Slam on the cards. How Pieter de Villiers manages the media furore over the Springbok emblem and his negotiation of the Straits of Luke Watson will be interesting of itself. The opportunity for us to see whether the promise of the Coca-Cola (read: Ellis) park massacre of the Canary Yellows translates to some big wins on tour is enough to have me in the front of the queue at Woolies to make sure I’m stocked up on green jocks.

    Peace.

Ja I’d probably change my earlier post and say that I’d rather have Heinke than Steenkamp.

i would play steyn at fullback. hes a natural 15: quick, great defence, huge boot and should fill montgomerys place instead of jantjes who is getting a bit too old and lacks the quality of his younger counterpart. jantjes

    what a season!!!

  16. Comment by Anonymous | 10/20/08 at 6:52 am

That is n’t a bad squad, but it certainly won’t be the squad selected to tour. They’ll take 3 hookers and all 3 scrumhalves as always. I don’t agree, but you know it’s gonna happen.

    Here is the probable squad:
    1. Beast, Gurthro (Heinke should be there instead of Gurthro, but Gurthro will unfairly get it)
    2. Smit, Bismarck, Strauss
    3. Jannie, Mujati (Mujati is worthless. I’d rather have Carstens or BJ or Cj there but again it ain’t gonna happen)
    4. Bakkies, Danie (Should be Muller. Danie has been sub-par all year post WC)
    5. Vic, Bekker (Undisputed)
    6. Schalk, Brussouw (I still think Puke will get it here. God help us if he does)
    7. Smith, Deysel (Has to be)
    8. Kanko, Spies (I would take Vermeulen ahead of Spies. He is SO over rated. Spies has done nothing all year and many of us still thinks that he took steroids at some point)
    9. Du Preez, Januarie ( I would like Kockett. It’s a coin toss between him and Januarie)
    10. Butch, Grant (Should be Pienaar and Grant but again wishful thinking here)
    11. Habana, Nokwe (Undisputed)
    12. Bosman, De Villiers (Meyer is too good and solid a player to leave at home and he is still young)
    13. Fourie, Jacobs (Undisputed)
    14. Pieterson, Chavanga/Odwa (Odwa better overall ball skills, Chavanga’s raw pace is always an asset)
    15. Jantjies, Steyn (but will probably be Tiger Mangweni or Kirshner even though they have done nothing to deserve it. I pray that Bevin Fortuin is not picked again. I think Gurthro is faster than him!)

At the end of the day, Butch said himself he reckons he’s done playing for the Boks. He is injury prone and, while he did it for us at the WC,(THanks Butch) we should move on and look at Pienaar and Grant who are young and could be sensational as Eddie Jones said on Boots and All. Even Bosman could still be the answer at 10, but few people have mentioned this.
I think that Deysel is a must, and of coarse it is imperative that we don’t take Luke “I Puke” Watson.

I wont pick any NH players. CJ & Butch James is overrated anyway. Wont pick Brussouw above Baywatch. Baywatch much more streetwise and longer in the teeth. He surely deserve a change. Problem is you can only take 30, including 3 hookers and scrummies. To do this I’ll pick only 3 wings (JP, Habana & Nokwe) and Pakslae can fit in the losies, meaning no place for Deysel.

    Starting team against Wales:
    15 Jantjes 14 Nokwe 13 Mossie 12 Jean 11 Habana 10 Grant 9 Januarie 8 Spies 7 Juan 6 Burger 5 Bekker 4 Bakkies 3 Jannie Doep 2 Smit 1 Beast.

Just to give some of the Bulls & Tjarkies a bit of a break.

  20. Comment by Anonymous | 10/20/08 at 3:55 pm

Wikus v Heerden should be in the squad. Even though Spies hasn’t been scoring tries, he does a sh$tload of work at the breakdown and in defence.

Mujati shouldn’t be in the side. He has been outscrummed in almost every Currie Cup game.

If you have to take some Bulls players, drop Kitchner and rather take Steyn as a back up goal kicking option.

    Hey Folks,

Thanks for the feedback - and some good squads.

KingArmscore had to phone me to remind me what an idiot I was for leaving out Ebersohn. I must take the abuse and admit I think he should make the trip - perhaps ahead of Kirchner.

He’s a quality player - probably the closest shot we have at developing our own Giteau - and deserves a shot.

As for the call for Terblanche! I know he’s playing well, but that’s pushing it…

Less than a week left till the announcement and for me the big questions are still:

    CJ & Butch from overseas
    Bakkies from injury
Brussouw, Vermuelen, Deysel, Grobbelaar, Daniel for the loose forwards?

We’ll just have to wait and see.

This is crazy, but just bare with me:
I believe this team will decimate ANY starting VX in the world today:

    1. Beast
    2. Bismarck
    3. John Smit (he’s done it for the Sharks)
    4. Bekker
    5. Bakkies
    6. Schalk
    7. Grobbelaar
    8. Kankowski
    9. Du Preez
    10. Pienaar
    11. Habana
    12. De Villiers
    13. Steyn
    14. Spies (was a wing for years)
    15. Jantjies

Yeah Anon… Pretty crazy - but not as crazy as some of PdV’s picks..
